Relief of Tsanko Lavrenov
Plovdiv, Old Town, eastern part of Hisar Kapia, “Tsanko Lavrenov” Street, 1982

From the very beginning of his career, Viktor Todorov has been considered one of the best sculptors – portraitists. This quality of his leads to a natural interest and he is often sought after for portraits of famous persons. It is no coincidence that after the death of Tsanko Lavrenov in 1978, he was assigned a relief portrait of the famous Plovdiv artist.

The relief portrait of Tsanko Lavrenov was cast in bronze and installed near Hisar Kapia, on the street named after the artist, in the Old Town of Plovdiv – one of Lavrenov’s favorite places and lifelong inspiration. The relief was placed in 1982.

In addition to our work on dating the monuments of Viktor Todorov, we contacted the Tsanko Lavrenov Foundation to share information about the relief of their patron. We are glad to have clarified the dating of this important portrait in memory of one of the great painters of Bulgarian fine art.

“Viktor Todorov is one of the best sculptors – portraitists. Some of his famous works are a portrait of Zlatyu Boyadzhiev, a portrait of the composer Ivan Spasov, a portrait of the writer Bertolt Brecht, among many others. He made the head – a relief for the tombstone of Zlatyu Boyadzhiev – and it was perfect, but unfortunately it was stolen and Zlatyu’s relatives asked me to restore it from photos.”
